    T. L. Hale Golf Tournament

The FUND partnered with the professional men of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., to host an annual golf tournament for the purpose of raising funds for scholarships. The tournament is held at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Oxmoor Valley. The tournament attracts around fifteen teams and generates $5,000 for scholarships. Many of the players provide golfing instructions to young golfers in an attempt to attract them to the sports as a positive alternative. This is a family event and designed to allow the participants to have fun and generate funds for a good cause. This program has generated scholarship to area students for over twenty years. Funds from other sources are matched with the proceeds from the golf tournament to allow up to ten thousand dollars to be awarded.

Young Boys & Men Youth Summit

The summit provides the participants with important knowledge from professionals in the area. It is held at the Birmingham Crossplex and is well attended. The summit held in October of this year attracted over 300 students. Some of the topics discussed were (1) handling dispute resolution, (2) managing peer pressure, (3) avoiding gang affiliation, (4) respecting authoritative figures and law enforcement officials and remaining in school. The participants were divided into groups based on age. Therefore, the presenters, which included the Mayor of Birmingham, were able to provide pertinent information in a format which related to each group. Representatives from various organizations participated. They included the Police Department, Birmingham City Council, Birmingham Interim School Superintendent and Mayor’s Division of Youth Services. The program received high praise from all attendants and will probably become a semi-annual event in the future.

    Community Involvement

The FUND participates in the annual clean-up of the Titusville community. Volunteers assist with cleaning the streets as well as vacant lots. The FUND works with the Titusville Community Association to help address the problems in the area. The FUND allows the Association to host an annual Christmas party in its facility and helps raise funds for school supplies. The FUND also raises funds for book bags in conjunction with local churches. Last school year over two hundred book bags were provided. The FUND participates in the annual Sickle Cell Walk and make contributions to the success of the event. Volunteers of the FUND also assist with the operations of the walk and help in any way possible. During holiday season, food baskets are provided to families that need a little help. This event is in conjunction with local churches. The FUND participates in the Toys for Tots program. The facility is used as a drop-off point.
